Primary and intermediate schools across New Zealand can get their hands on their Rugby World Cup 2011 (RWC 2011) Activity Books from this week, in one of the largest shipments of education material, which is going to 480,000 students as part of the RWC 2011 Education Programme.

The programme focuses on the Tournament as a significant world event and aims to enhance student learning across a range of activities.

“We are thrilled to deliver these resources which have been designed to align with the curriculum so students and teachers can be sure of their relevance in the classroom,” Director of the New Zealand 2011 Office, Leon Grice said.

The Government funded RWC 2011 Activity Books are part of the wider RWC 2011 Education Programme, which is a collaborative project between the NZ 2011 Office, Tournament Organisers Rugby New Zealand 2011 (RNZ 2011) and the New Zealand Rugby Union.

“We want every young New Zealander to be part of the Tournament and understand the importance of New Zealand hosting this world event,” said RNZ 2011 CEO Martin Snedden.

“This Tournament has both national and international significance and the RWC 2011 Education Programme allows students to explore the social and cultural impact of such an event”.

As part of the national RWC 2011 Education Programme, RNZ 2011 will provide schools with a group booking opportunity for students to attend local matches. For a number of matches, child price tickets will be available for school groups of 20 or more. The offer opens on Monday July 11. For more information, please visit www.rugbyworldcup.com/groups.

“This ticket offer is a great way for schools to bring the RWC 2011 Education Programme to life; giving students an opportunity to attend a match and support their adopted team,” said Snedden.

The RWC 2011 Education Programme has three key components:

  • RWC 2011 Activity Book: The RWC 2011 Activity Books provide all year 1-8 students with a book of learning activities. It has three curriculum levels (years 1-3, years 4-6 and years 7-8), and is strongly aligned to the New Zealand curriculum, There are also accompanying Teacher Notes available for teachers to download to facilitate classroom learning.

  • Ruggerland: As part of the Ruggerland education programme, the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) has developed activity sheets for teachers and students. These activity sheets students to explore numeracy, language, and the social sciences using RWC 2011 as a context for teaching and learning. Visit www.ruggerland.co.nz.

  • KidZone: To highlight the international significance of RWC 2011, Tournament Organisers RNZ 2011 have created a learning unit which encourage students to “adopt a second team” to learn about one of the 20 countries participating in the Tournament. The unit provides a collection of student activity sheets, accompanying Teacher’s resources and a series of video resources. Visit www.rugbyworldcup.com/kidzone.

“In just 63 days, we’ll welcome 85,000 visitors into the country, teams and supporters from 19 other nations and the eyes of the world will be on New Zealand. The RWC 2011 Education Programme allows students to celebrate this milestone in our country’s history and understand the importance of giving our guests a special welcome as they visit our communities and play their matches,” said Leon Grice.

“The reaction from the students to the books arriving in schools across the country this week shows they’re very keen to get involved with RWC 2011.”

New Zealand primary and intermediate students throughout the country can expect their RWC 2011 Activity Books to arrive from this week onwards. Students in the Auckland region will receive their RWC 2011 Activity Books from the beginning of Term 3, along with an additional free Activity Pack provided by Auckland Council, featuring stickers, games, and a range of other fun activities.
