Upgrading Beach Haven wharf, planning for business development at Wairau Valley and developing a sports precinct at Northcote Road are among the key projects in the Kaipatiki Local Board Plan now out for submissions.

The draft plan sets out the aspirations and priorities for Kaipatiki during the next three years and provides the local board with a framework to undertake activities on behalf of its communities.

Kaipatiki comprises inner Waitemata Harbour suburbs including Beach Haven, Birkdale, Birkenhead, Chatswood, Glenfield, Hillcrest, Marlborough, Northcote, Sunnybrae, Totaravale and Wairau Valley. It is bounded by the Northern Motorway to the east, Sunset Road to the north and the coast of the inner Waitemata Harbour to the south and west.

The priorities have been established following public feedback and will be further refined as a result of community views expressed during the submissions period, which ends at 4pm on August 8.

Kaipatiki Draft Local Board Plan summaries containing submission forms have been sent to every household and submissions can be made online via www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/haveyoursay

Board chair Lindsay Waugh encourages locals to get involved in the planning process.

“The Local Board Plan will be a founding document for our new board and we really need residents to help define us and our place in the larger scheme of things,” she says.

“This is a new era of governance and it offers us an opportunity to get rid of the baggage of old and approach our future with passion for our community and a vision for the future. Kaipatiki is an area with rich connections to the past, a flourishing arts community and a real commitment to the environment – this is a strong combination with great potential.

“It’s up to us all to protect what is special about our area, make sure our communities have what they need to thrive, and set a clear direction for our own bright future.”

Other key projects include
§ Ensuring implementation of the Northcote Centre Plan projects
§ Providing infrastructure to support the Pa Hara Keke, a regionally significant resource for a flax weaving initiative at Eskdale Reserve
§ Advocating for the Chelsea Heritage Park
§ Showcasing our creative base through public art
§ Developing a walking and cycling network right across Kaipatiki .
