Hine Street Stormwater Project Begins
A 12-week project to improve stormwater drainage from Hine Street will see a section of the Coastal Walkway closed for two weeks.
While construction of the stormwater system begins tomorrow (Thursday), a pedestrian detour around the Coastal Walkway will be in place from 2 August while a tunnel is drilled under the railway line and a pipe and manholes are installed from the walkway.
“We’ve timed the work to avoid the school holidays and also for it to be finished and the walkway open for use well before Rugby World Cup 2011,” says Manager Projects Mark Hall.
“The pedestrian detour will be in place between Belt and Cutfield roads.”
In addition, Hine Street between Belt and Cutfield roads will be down to one lane for traffic during one week of the project.
Currently, this section of Hine Street floods during heavy rain. The new and larger pipe will enable surface water to drain away more quickly to the sea.
