Flare sparks search of Wakatipu
An emergency flare, spotted in the area of Two Mile Creek, near Queenstown, at approximately 9pm last night (Sunday) sparked a search of Lake Wakatipu.
Queenstown Lakes District harbourmaster Marty Black received ‘a dozen calls’ after the flare was spotted by Kelvin Heights and Fernhill residents.
“We spent quite a bit of time searching the general area but nothing was found and there have been no overdue reports,” Mr Black said.
According to reports the flare was a genuine orange distress flare with parachute.
“It’s important that we identify the origins of the flare and speak to those involved,” he said.
Anyone firing a distress flare for reasons other than an emergency could be liable to face prosecution.
“Firing off a flare for entertainment or any other reason is not only irresponsible, it’s illegal,” Mr Black said.
The harbourmaster was calling on the public to contact himself or the police to offer any further information about the sighting.
