MARLBOROUGH

Across Marlborough there is a patchwork of areas where, through owner vigilance and RHD persistence, rabbit populations are being controlled. However, in other places RHD resistance has built up and populations are again booming, including the rabbit-prone upper Awatere valley plus hotspots in the Avon Valley, Wairau Valley foothills near the Wye, and coastal Ward.

Marlborough District Council’s biosecurity section works with Biosecurity New Zealand to help manage the control of pests, including rabbits. With the winter rabbit control season looming, now is time for land owners to be thinking about their control methods.

The Council has begun a bi-annual newsletter, published in April and August, which is circulated to those within historically rabbit-prone areas of Marlborough. Get the latest information relating to rabbit control, current population trends and general information to assist in the battle against the resurgent rabbit. The results of RHD immunity testing are coming up in the August 2011 issue.
