The Project Management Institute of New Zealand (PMINZ) has awarded the Auckland Council-led Aotea Square redevelopment the Public Sector Project of the Year Award.

According to judges the project displayed “excellent management of technical, physical and political components to deliver a successful project for the wider Auckland community.”

Sponsored by the Institute of Public Administration New Zealand (IPANZ), the award was presented earlier this month and comes shortly after the project received accolades at the Property Council Awards.

Council property team manager of major and special projects, Richard Cole said both of these prestigious awards acknowledge the hard work and dedication that went into delivering this complex project.

“The complexities of the project were numerous and to manage them successfully the project team - who not only included council staff but also consultants and business stakeholders - consistently went above and beyond the call of duty. In particular, every effort went into reducing disruption for the general public through intricate project sequencing,” says Mr Cole.

The project’s management and methodologies also enabled significant savings on the original budget and all businesses including the Civic Car Park, Aotea Centre and Town Hall were able to continue operating during construction.

The $84 million redevelopment project included an upgrade of the Square, Civic Car Park upgrade and roof replacement as well as improvements to the façade of Aotea Centre. Works commenced at the end of 2008 and were largely completed, ahead of schedule, two years later.

As part of Auckland’s CBD into the Future Strategy and the Aotea Quarter Plan, the newly redeveloped Aotea Square represents the city’s premier public space for enjoying the best of Auckland’s arts and entertainment.
