A number of options are being considered for the relocation of the Waimarama Community Hall, following the major flooding which struck the township in late April.

The hall has been out of action following erosion of a bank of the Pouhokio Stream, making it necessary to consider the relocation of this valuable community facility.

Hastings District Council Parks and Properties Assets Manager Colin Hosford says” a number of sites are under consideration for the hall. Moving the structure into a nearby paddock would make it safe from any future erosion of the stream bank and provide adequate parking for functions.”

“Consideration is also being given to moving the hall onto reserve land near the surf club and playground which would create a small group of activities in one area while another site on community land is also in the mix.”

Mr Hosford says” all three sites were warmly received at a Waimarama residents meeting on Wednesday night. A fourth site near the fire station was suggested following the meeting. Further feedback from the community is being accepted by the Waimarama hall committee and will be taken into account before any decisions are made.”

The area of the Pouhokio stream near the hall which has eroded will be reshaped and planted in an effort to prevent any further erosion issues.

Council continues to work closely with the Waimarama community on restoration work following the flooding. The meeting provided an opportunity for local people to provide feedback on the work carried out to date and give their views on priority areas for Council to focus upon.
