Council hosting second MEMA information session
Hamilton City Council regulatory unit staff will host a second information session this
month to give guidance on how businesses and organisations can operate during
Rugby World Cup 2011.
The Major Event Management Act (MEMA) requires Council to enforce regulations
pertaining to events near Rugby World Cup 2011 stadia, as well as protecting the
Tournament’s trademarked logos, emblems and other copyrights.
Events held in host cities during Rugby World Cup 2011 can not imply or suggest a
connection to the Tournament, unless certified by the event’s organisers, said City Safe
Unit Manager Elton Parata.
Mr Parata said while the message from Rugby World Cup 2011 organisers was
“business as usual” for organisations in host communities, it was important companies
and other groups understood what they can and can not do when their cities are
hosting matches.
“We want to ensure we deliver as much information as possible to the community in
relation to the Act and what it means for Rugby World Cup 2011,” said Mr Parata.
“We'd rather give guidance and advice to the community through education and
engagement than have to use enforcement measures.”
The information evening will be held on 27 July, in the Radio Sport Lounge, at Waikato
Stadium. Refreshments will be served from 5.45pm, and staff will begin delivering
information and taking questions from 6pm. Ministry of Economic Development and
Rugby New Zealand representatives will also be present.
To register, please RSVP at hamilton.rwc@hcc.govt.nz or phone 07-838 6756 by 5pm,
Friday the 22nd of July 2011. Note: RSVP for catering purposes.
