Springbok Test Road Closures
If you're coming into town on Saturday 30 July, there are a couple of things you need to know.
The international rugby match between New Zealand and South Africa at the Westpac Stadium on Saturday 30 July means there will be a large number of pedestrians walking to and from the stadium.
People need to be aware of the road closures if they are coming into the city that night, says the City Council's Infrastructure Performance Manager, Jon Visser.
"Because of the game we will be closing some roads to provide a safer environment for pedestrians and a more effective way of managing taxis. The road closures are designed to cause as little disruption as possible to public transport and traffic."
Bunny Street will be closed at its intersection with Featherston Street from 5.30pm to 10.30pm. This will enable a drop-off 'loop' from Waterloo Quay to be created at the Railway Station.
The following roads will be closed to traffic from 8.30pm to 10.30pm:
- Mulgrave Street between Aitken Street and the intersection of Featherston Street and Thorndon Quay
- Kate Sheppard Place at its intersection with Mulgrave Street
- Thorndon Quay between Davis and Featherston streets (local access only)
- Featherston Street between Thorndon Quay and Whitmore Street (local access only)
- Stout Street between Whitmore and Bunny streets (local access only).
Please note that local access refers to residents and approved vehicles only.
If you want to take the bus that night, they will be running as usual.
If you're going to the game and need to get a taxi home afterwards, they'll be available from:
- the usual taxi stand outside the Railway Station on Bunny Street
- the bottom of the stadium walkway spiral on Thorndon Quay
- Stout Street at the Featherston Street intersection.
Normal accessibility arrangements are in place - for more information phone the stadium on (04) 473 3881.
"Remember to plan your journey next Saturday - you should allow extra time to get into town, so why not come in earlier and hit the shops or hospitality venues?" suggests Jon.
As with previous road closures around the stadium, parking restrictions on some streets will be in place from around 3.30pm.
It's important we understand any issues residents and businesses in the affected areas may have so please contact us with any concerns. Please note that all areas are open to pedestrians.
There will be very similar closures in place for Rugby World Cup 2011 games during September and October. More information on these closures will be available nearer the Tournament.
