Hornby Library will start issuing and topping up Metrocards, which allow bus users to pay in advance for bus fares, from Wednesday 20 July.

The trial initiative will be rolled out to other Christchurch City Libraries, including Lyttelton and New Brighton, in the coming weeks. The service will also be offered at Upper Riccarton Library when it re-opens to the public.

The libraries will provide this service as part of an agreement with Environment Canterbury, which administers the prepaid card on behalf of participating Metro bus services.

The initiative will offer library customers an alternative way to top up and buy Metrocards other than on the bus or online.

Libraries and Information Unit Manager Carolyn Robertson says the initiative is a great opportunity for Christchurch City Libraries to be able to offer their customers an additional service.

“We are pleased to be able to offer our customers a wide range of services and this is just another way of addressing our customers’ needs,” she says.
