WELLINGTON

Greater Wellington has received an application from Exide Technologies to renew consents needed to operate its Petone Lead-Acid Battery Recycling Plant.

The consents are for Exide Technologies to discharge lead and other contaminants to air from the battery plant’s stacks and from fugitive sources [such as factory doors, minor gaps in roof or walls, or around vents]. Exide has applied for a consent term of 15 years.

Exide’s consent application will be fully notified, meaning the public will have an opportunity to make submissions (20 working days once notified), and have those submissions heard in person by a hearing panel.Greater Wellington will notify the application to the public later this month.

Exide can continue to operate the plant while the consent application process is taking place. Greater Wellington will continue to monitor Exide’s activities during the consent application process.
