The latest stage of Council’s Making Places project has started with improvements to the alleyway linking Queens Drive and Knights Road.

It includes new lighting to improve security and illuminated sign boards to help pedestrians find their way around the central business district (CBD).

Urban design manager Paki Maaka says the alleyway  improvements are part of plans to make the CBD better connected.

“In the past the alleyway has been poorly lit and people have been reluctant to use it.

“The improvements aim to make the alleyway a popular thoroughfare linking the CBD to the new Square development next to the Dowse.”

Paki says neighbouring businesses have been very supportive of the improvements.

“They have been great to deal with and are right behind what Council is trying to achieve.”

In other Making Places news, a car park with space for 21 cars opposite the Council building on Laings Road is nearly complete. The car park marks the first stage of The Square development, with work on the actual Square scheduled to start in October.
