Waterloo Quay Nearly Finished

Rugby World Cup 2011 visitors will be the first to enjoy improvements along Waterloo Quay. They, together with cruise ship passengers this summer, will be nicely sheltered as they take off down the road.

A canopy made out of aluminium and glass is now in place on the harbour side from the cruise ship terminal for a stretch of about a couple of hundred metres. This is just one of the ways we've been enhancing this important entrance to the city.

We've also widened the footpath on the stadium-side of the road. To make room for the new footpath, we've had to move some train tracks that go to the port. And cyclists will be glad to know we've surrounded the tracks with rubber so their wheels won't get caught.

And in keeping with our plan to use stormwater sustainably throughout the city, we've installed rain gardens - which water the trees - as far as the stadium pedestrian bridge. Further pohutukawa trees are being planted to line both sides of Waterloo Quay as far as the stadium.

Work began just under a year ago, and all going well the finishing touches will be completed by early August.
