Heavy rain results in sewage spill and stormwater man holes popping

A sewage spill has been identified at the Hatea Pump Station in Whangarei. The spill is as the result of heavy downpours this afternoon and sewage has spilled into the Hatea River.

At this point the spill has resulted in the Wastewater Treatment Plant going into a medium bypass.

There are also several reports of stormwater man hole covers popping open in flooded areas. The public is advised to avoid flooded areas and report any further man hole problems to the Whangarei District Council.
