Hutt City Council received 21 applications to its fund established to help local community groups get into the rugby spirit.

Council’s Community Services General Manager Marty Grenfell says the number of applications forced difficult decisions to be made.

“We chose to offer funding to those applicants who best showed they will put on a quality event that will engage the local community and visitors.

“We believe we have a good mix of events and activities that local rugby fans can embrace," he says.

The following organisations have been offered funding:

  1.  Wainuiomata Rugby Club Inc - $3,000 towards supporting themed sporting afternoons, a Golden Oldies tournament and international theme nights
  2. Te Maori Cultural Centre Ltd - $2,000 towards hosting visitors around the Cultural Centre and Waiwhetu Marae
  3. Hutt Old Boys Marist Rugby Club Inc - $3,000 towards opening the Club for televised night games and running themed nights promoting New Zealand’s cultural diversity.
  4. Hutt Valley Community Arts Inc - $2,000 towards a series of community art workshops and displays to depict personal heroes, including sporting heroes, in paint and collage.
  5. Petone Rugby Football Club Inc - $4,000 towards a series of hospitality events including offering a venue for viewing matches in a purpose built cinema.

In addition, three other applications have been supported in principle but are subject to final negotiations. These include applications from two Tongan cultural organisations keen to support their national side.
