Up to eight trees will be removed from Pukekura Park’s Tree Fern Gully this week to make the area safe for public use.

On the weekend of 9 and 10 July a large pine tree fell over when the ground became too sodden to support its weight, badly damaging other trees in the process.

“We’ve had the area closed to the public because of the danger posed by the damaged trees,” says Acting Manager Parks Stuart Robertson.

“We’ll go in there this week and clear out about seven or eight damaged trees so that we can open the gully for public use again.

“It’ll be a tricky job as we want to avoid damaging the King Ferns in the area – which is itself a substantial botanical collection.”

The King Fern Gully is to the south-east of the sportsground.
