Pointsmen will be at work on an eastern section of the Coastal Walkway this week as heavy vehicles cross the pathway.

From tomorrow (Tuesday) about 120 macrocarpas and pines will be removed between The Links access way and Bell Block, to clear the way for part of the Waitara to New Plymouth sewer line.

“We’ll have a large truck transporting a digger to the site so pointsmen will be on duty to stop pedestrians and cyclists on the Coastal Walkway from time to time, for their safety,” says Manager Projects Mark Hall.

“We expect the work to be completed by Friday, but it might push into Saturday if we’re delayed by bad weather.”

A strip about 5m wide and 300m long will be cleared of vegetation for the sewer project.

The macrocarpas were originally planted as part of a soil stabilisation project. “There will be plenty of trees still on site to keep the soil stable when this removal is completed,” says Mr Hall.
