RWC 2011 Sculpture Unveiling

The sculpture we commissioned for the city's hosting of Rugby World Cup 2011, and created by Richard Taylor's Weta Workshop, is almost ready to be officially unveiled.

The sculpture was moved to the Jack Ilott Green near Civic Square last week.

This is a temporary site while work continues to identify a permanent site after the tournament.

A maquette, or model, of the sculpture was first unveiled in March last year and $350,000 funding for the sculpture was agreed by City Councillors in June 2010 after public consultation on the 2010/11 Annual Plan.

The sculpture will remain fenced off to the public this week as the finishing touches are made to the public viewing area.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown will formally unveil the sculpture at a ceremony this Saturday 13 August.

The sculpture symbolises Wellington's geographical position, where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean meet in Cook Strait, and shows players contesting a line-out.
