Farmers reminded to protect waterways when disposing of milk
Farmers having to dispose of milk because of weather-related difficulties limiting collection are being reminded of Otago Regional Council (ORC) rules which require it to be disposed of responsibly.
Fonterra Co-operative Group tankers have had problems collecting milk from some dairy farms in the Otago region because of treacherous road conditions.
ORC group manager regional services Jeff Donaldson said the council realised it was a difficult and stressful time for farmers, especially since the current stormy weather coincided with the start of calving in some areas.
However, Mr Donaldson said it was still incumbent upon farmers to be responsible in the handling of milk which had been unable to be collected.
Primarily, this involved not disposing of it into waterways, or onto saturated soils.
Fonterra is recommending that milk which has not been collected is stored for feeding calves or in the farm effluent system. If neither option is practicable, farmers should contact the company for advice on alternative disposal options.
Mr Donaldson endorsed this advice, adding that ORC staff were available to clarify the council’s rules if farmers were in any doubt about their responsibilities.
Fonterra added that whole milk can be fed to calves before or just after weaning, or disposed of at any piggery if arrangements are made and suitable storage is available.
