Landmarks awards promote Hastings civic pride

Outstanding features created around Hastings will be recognized when the 2011 Landmarks awards are handed out this week.

The annual awards recognize projects which make a significant contribution to the promotion of the districts image, identity, place and civic pride.

This year’s awards will have a new category which will reward signage that compliments the architectural features and era of the building.

Other awards will be made for architecture, landscape, history, public art and façade enhancement, with the overall winner being presented the Jeremy Dwyer Supreme award.

Landmarks Trust President Joyce Barry says” the trust was created by former Mayor, the late Jeremy Dwyer in an effort to promote civic pride through the enhancement of the natural and built environment.”

“The awards are an integral part of recognising those who are instrumental in enhancing the image of our community,” Mrs Barry says.

The guest speakers at the awards function will be architect Graham Linwood and artist Jacob Scott, who will discuss the exciting plans to save John Scott’s iconic headquarters at Lake Waikaremoana.

The awards will be presented by Hastings Deputy Mayor Cynthia Bowers in the Shakespeare Room at the Hawke’s Bay Opera House on Thursday August 25th at 5.30. The ceremony will be held as part of the Landmarks AGM and is open to the public.
