Kelson residents were thankful for the help received from a local contractor Tim O’Connor when trying to get home under a blanket of snow last week.

Tim had been listening to the forecasts and, when he saw the southerly approaching, retrieved his digger from Upper Hutt and drove down the motorway to his home suburb of Kelson.

Throughout that night, with snow falling steadily, he used his tractor to clear the hill road with residents tucking in behind in their cars to get home. He repeated this constantly and assisted in retrieving stuck vehicles and anything else people needed.

Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace said Tim O’Connor would not accept any payment and helped his neighbours in a true spirit of supporting his community.

“It was an outstanding effort at a time when the whole country was hit by an Antarctic chill that brought snow to the valley and the hills beyond.”
