The Christchurch City Council is helping Halswell people to get involved in their community with the publication of a new community directory listing more than a hundred clubs, activities and contacts.

There are listings for walking groups, community groups, sports clubs and churches as well as a range of services and facilities that can be accessed by the community.

“The new directory will play a significant role in the development of this fast-growing area by helping new and longer-term Halswell residents to get involved and develop a sense of belonging,” according to Alan Bywater, the Council’s Programme Manager Strong Communities.

“We had planned to have the directory available late last year, but the earthquakes delayed its completion," says Alan Bywater. “The directory is now needed more than ever before.

Events over the past year, especially the earthquakes and snow, have highlighted the importance of local community connections and involvement. Strong communities across Christchurch are better able to work effectively together to respond and recover in difficult times.

“The new directory will be very useful for people wanting to get involved in local activities or who have something to offer their community. Being involved locally can help newcomers settle in and give longer-time residents a chance to welcome new neighbours.”

The new directory is available from the Halswell Library, local schools, kindergartens and churches. It is also online.
