Sports clubs were the big winners in the latest allocation of grants by the district’s community boards.

Boards gave out grants totalling $36,228 at their meetings this month, with more than half this money going to sports groups.

The Te Houtaewa Trust was the biggest winner receiving a $10,000 grant from Te Hiku Community Board.

The trust will use the grant to stage a Top Town event as part of the 2012 Kaitaia A & P Show.

Board chairman Dennis Bowman said the board was happy to support the event because it would bring northern communities together and add another dimension to the show.

Other organisations that Te Hiku Community Board gave grants to were:

  • Houhora Golf Club which received $6,000 towards the costs of installing a new water pump
