"This is particularly important for our young people who will be employed in the new technology companies to come. Ultra Fast Broadband will enable companies to operate competitively around the world from here in Lower Hutt."

He said the Greater Wellington District Council and city coucnils across the region had worked cooperatively.

Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Hon Steven Joyce, said the Broadband was the biggest infrastructure development in the history of New Zealand and would take eight years to complete. " It will make New Zealand competitive on the international stage and provide the push for business development. This will include smaller centres where specialist industries will have a global reach through out the ultra fast broadban network."

Students from Kelson primary school were also present, and Mayor Wallace invited to have a say, with chairman of the school students executive Jordan Burgess, saying it will be a good thing.
