Council welcomes Port Hills decision

Christchurch City Council welcomes the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority’s announcement that 9700 Port Hills properties have been rezoned green.

Mayor Bob Parker says this is good news for residents and business owners in the areas affected and it will allow them to get on with rebuilding following the earthquakes.

However, he is reminding residents that the risk of rockfall and other geotechnical hazards remains in some of these areas and notices prohibiting entry to homes are still in place.

Within this new green zone there are still 30 properties scattered across the hill areas that are red stickered.

None of these properties are threatened by rockfall, major landslides or significant geotechnical hazards.

They have been red stickered due to local retaining wall failures, major structural damage to the houses, or other localised geotech issues.

In all cases these properties can be dealt with through the normal EQC insurance and consenting processes.

The Council has been working closely with CERA and other agencies on land issues in the Port Hills and will continue its work on geotechnical assessments and remediation work.
