Live music, the switching on of a new fountain and ice skating displays will be part of next week’s opening of Hamilton’s revitalised Garden Place.

Mayor Julie Hardaker will officially open Garden Place in an action-packed evening from 5.30pm on Thursday, 15 September.

Part of the CityHeart project, Garden Place has rejuvenated and beautified for Hamiltonians and visitors, and next Thursday’s launch coincides with the installation opening of an ice rink by Douglas Webber Group, which will be in Garden Place until 24 October.

The public opening will begin with an official welcome and speech by Mayor Hardaker, followed by a blessing. The new Garden Place fountain will be turned on for the first time, and live music will also be part of the opening festivities.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend to enjoy the central city public space. Mayor Julie Hardaker said: “There has been some controversy about the work in Garden Place, but this re-opening is a time to put that behind us and for everyone to celebrate and enjoy Hamilton’s main public square. It’s also timed
well with the first Rugby World Cup 2011 match in Hamilton, and our Back to Back Weekend of events. This is terrific for Hamilton.”

The Matariki-themed sculpture planned for Garden Place is expected to be installed later this year.
