The gardens outside the Riddiford Hotel on Knights Road have had a spring makeover thanks to a new council initiative aimed at improving the attractiveness of the CBD

In a ‘groundbreaking’ deal between council and the hotel, council paid for the upgrade while the hotel will pay council’s contractors to maintain it.

Strategic Services general manager Kim Kelly says the hotel is a first of a number of gardens in Lower Hutt’s central business district set to be upgraded with the assistance of council.

“We will be approaching other property owners to discuss how we can work together to improve their gardens and make the CBD a more attractive place for people to shop and relax.

Riddiford Hotel manager Raymond Fu is pleased with the makeover and access to low cost maintenance services through council.

“As the plants become established we will have an impressive garden which will be affordable to maintain.”

The Making Places project brings our city’s CBD Vision 2030 to life. It aims to maximise the potential of our central business district, by making it more attractive to businesses and residents. For more visit www.huttcity.govt.nz/makingplaces
