The Lower Waitaki - South Coastal Canterbury Zone Committee will meet in Hook this Thursday, 15 September.

At the meeting the committee will hear presentations on the groundwater resource in the zone, audited self management practices, and the region’s wetlands.

The committee will also discuss its findings from a series of stakeholder meetings which were held to get feedback on water management priorities in the zone.

In late September the committee will engage with the community to get their feedback on water priorities. This feedback, along with feedback from the stakeholder meetings, will ultimately feed in to the Committee’s Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP).

The committee has four working groups that look at specific areas of importance to water management in the zone. The four working groups cover biodiversity, Waitaki Allocation Plan, water quality, drinking water and flows, and the Wainono Lagoon. The recommendations from these groups will form the basis of committee’s draft ZIP.

At previous meetings the committee has looked at water quality, wetland protection, and water recreation in the zone. It has also approved $100,000 in funding for six Immediate Steps projects and secured $120,000 from the regional committee for restoration at the Wainono Lagoon.

The Lower Waitaki Zone Committee has also been on a number of field trips to engage with community members, Rūnanga, and industry partners.

The Lower Waitaki-South Coastal Canterbury Zone Committee operates as a joint committee of Environment Canterbury and the Waimate and Waitaki District Councils. The zone extends from the Otaio catchment in the north, to the Waitaki Dam in the south, taking in Waimate, Kurow and Duntroon.

The committee comprises of; Robin Murphy, Kate White, Matthew Ross, Sean McCready, Andrew Cocking, Anna Te Maiharoa-Dodds, Peter Skelton, Geoff Keeling, Peter McIlraith, Patrick Tipa (Moeraki), Te Wera King (Waihao) and Mandy Home (Arowhenua).
