Consumerization Of IT: A Survey Of IT Professionals In Australia And New Zealand

IT Consumerization is the growing practice of employees using personally-owned devices and applications for business purposes. It can present significant challenges for corporate IT departments to manage support, compliance and security.

The following data represents the feedback of 118 IT professionals from Australia and New Zealand who participated in a survey that included 741 total participants from around the globe.

Key Findings – Australia and New Zealand

• Extensive use of personal devices for work
- 86% say employees use personal devices for work
- 75% report employees use smartphones
- 64% say PCs are brought to work by employees including Windows, Macintosh, and Linux desktops and laptops

• Consumerization of IT driving increased OS support
- 58% are supporting more operating systems because of the use of personal devices
- 70% see a greater demand for support of Apple OSx (Apple’s desktop operating system) since introduction of the iPhone and iPad

• IT is concerned about use of personal devices
- 88% have concerns about the use of personal devices for work purposes
- 68% are concerned about network security breaches

• Devices brought to work by employees are not managed appropriately
- 34% say that employees use unauthorized devices and applications to connect to the network; 32% admit that
it’s possible they just don’t know about it
- 69% are not confident that they know of all personal devices being used

• IT has policies in place, but lacks tools to manage personal devices at work
- 91% believe it is important to have a policy in place to support personal devices
- 72% currently have a policy; a further 22% have plans to put a policy in place
- 70% say they lack the necessary tools to manage personal devices
