CHRISTCHURCH

Call it a touch of class, call it a move towards excellence. The
Christchurch City Council featured well in the Best Awards from the
Design Institute of New Zealand in Auckland last week.

A Gold (for the Christchurch Art Gallery street furniture) and three
silver and three bronze must say something about the Council's push for
excellence.

The Christchurch Art Gallery's was the listed client in the entry
Giacometti Shadows, the Art Gallery's themed street furniture.

The Gold was earned in the Environmental Graphics Category by designers
STRATEGY Design and Advertising.

Mac's Print, a series of outdoor posters for the Art Gallery, took
Bronze in the Visual Communication category.

Be There, Christchurch's cultural guide and another Council initiative,
took Silver in the same category the Art Gallery won Gold. And the
Christchurch Body Festival (sponsored and supported by the Council) won
bronze, also in that category.

The Christchurch Arts Festival also garnered two awards - Silver in the
Identity Development (Large Scale) category and Bronze in Broadcast
Graphic Design for its TV commercial.

The unique Peace Bell Pavilion at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens won a
Silver for Spatial Design at the Best Awards. It had earlier won three
Canterbury awards for design, colour and use of concrete. It was
designed by Christchurch City Council architects.
