Roll out of new Ultra Fast Broadband (UFB) infrastructure has started in Kelson, Lower Hutt. Melling will also be among the first areas in the Wellington region with new fibre in the next 12 months.

This adds to a fibre network from Seaview and Petone up to Avalon for businesses to access a dedicated connection.

You can find out if you are included in the UFB rollout, check on its progress and see if you can connect to the existing business fibre network today, by entering your address into Chorus' online fibre map at www.chorus.co.nz/ch-ournetwork.

Mayor Ray Wallace told the launch gathering earlier in August at Kelson "it is an exciting development that would help shape the future opportunities for business and employment growth in Lower Hutt.

"This is particularly important for our young people who will be employed in the new technology companies to come. Ultra Fast Broadband will enable companies to operate competitively around the world from here in Lower Hutt."

Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Hon Steven Joyce, said broadband was the biggest infrastructure development in the history of New Zealand and would take eight years to complete. " It will make New Zealand competitive on the international stage and provide the push for business development. This will include smaller centres where specialist industries will have a global reach throughout the Ultra Fast Broadband network."

Chorus, New Zealand's largest telecommunications network operator together with Crown Fibre Holdings are responsible for the rollout around the country to be completed in 2018.
