Redcliffs School will be putting on carnival fun alongside the Christchurch City Council’s Community Fanzone from midday to 11pm at Ferrymead Park Sports Fields on Sunday 2 October.

Christchurch City Council Marketing Manager Richard Stokes says the Community Fanzones are travelling to the eastern suburbs during Rugby World Cup 2011 to ensure no one misses out on the action.

“Residents living in the Sumner through to Ferrymead area have had a rough time this year with earthquakes and crumbling cliffs, particularly the kids who have had to move around a lot. This Community Fanzone will provide them with some fun and time out of from their troubles.

“There’s also a big match on this particular day with New Zealand v Canada at 3:30pm – a match no Kiwi fan will want to miss.”

There will be fun for the whole family including carnival rides, food stalls, market stalls and a large screen, centre field to watch the Rugby matches live.

Redcliffs School Fair coordinator Nicoli Fox-Waite says this event ensures the school children don’t entirely miss out on their annual Redcliffs School Fair.

”This event is a great opportunity to bring our scattered community together for the day, as well as to allow some displaced Christchurch businesses to join in.

“We’re encouraging local residents to come and join with Redcliffs School and the Council in a great community event and a fun day out for everyone,” says Fox-Waite.

Carnival attractions will run throughout the afternoon, with matches playing well into the night.

Background: Redcliffs School was forced to leave its site after the June 13 earthquake. Staff and children have moved schools twice in two months and are now situated at a temporary site in the nearby suburb of Sumner. This move from the Redcliffs’ site has meant that Redcliffs School is unable to hold its annual school fair in its traditional format.

The fair is one of the biggest school fairs in Christchurch; an event greatly looked forward to by the local community. It is also the school’s main fundraiser and a vital source of income for the school.
