The Lower Waitaki – South Coastal Canterbury Zone Committee is holding a series of public meetings to update the community on local water issues.

People who attend the meetings will also be asked to provide feedback on the committee’s priorities for water management. These priorities will guide the committee’s Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP).

The draft ZIP will recommend the actions, responsibilities and time-frames for activities to help achieve the principles, targets and goals set out in the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS).

The priorities will be focussed around specific areas of importance to water management in the zone including; biodiversity, Waitaki Allocation Plan, drinking water, flows, lowland streams and water quality, and the Wainono Lagoon.

Once developed, the community will also have an opportunity to provide feedback on the ZIP before it is submitted to council. The zone committee expects to be calling for feedback on its draft ZIP in late October 2011.

Since forming, the committee has had numerous meetings, field trips and presentations to bring it up to speed on water management issues in the zone.

The Lower Waitaki – South Coastal Canterbury Zone extends from the Otaio catchment in the north, to the Waitaki Dam in the south.
