No alternative site for proposed cremator

Christchurch City Council has been unable to find an alternative to the current site for the proposed Ecocoffins business and cremator in Sydenham.

In July the Council asked staff to investigate an alternative site to the Hawdon Street/Buchan Street site following concerns from the Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board and some other businesspeople and groups in the area.

However no readily available alternative sites were available at a similar rent that could be quickly adapted for the proposed business use.

The Council voted today not to proceed further in trying to find an alternative site. The owner who intends installing and operating a cremator on the Sydenham site has complied with all Council policies and rules relating to a consent for the operation.
