Demand for Council Facilities
If you use the car park or go lane-swimming at Freyberg Pool or Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre, you may have noticed a few changes during Rugby World Cup 2011.
Council facilities around the city are being used as part of the tournament - including in some new ways.
Two Wellington City Council pools, three sportsfields and the new ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie are being used by visiting teams for training sessions - in addition to facilities in Porirua, Hutt City and Masterton.
Access to these facilities may not be available during closed training sessions. Newtown Park and Rugby League Park are closed to the public, meaning walking access around them is affected.
It also pays to check whether Freyberg Pool or Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre lane-swimming space is affected by teams training.
We've taken a new approach to make sure there are enough campervan parks in the region to deal with the influx of visitors during RWC 2011, complementing existing commercial sites.
Temporary parking spaces are available at Freyberg Pool, the Aquatic Centre and Evans Bay Marina. Campervans can also park at some rugby clubs, around the South Coast, and a temporary site at Trentham Racecourse. Public toilets near coastal and other temporary motorhome parking sites are open 24/7 and our park rangers are patrolling and providing information.
At Freyberg Pool, motorhomes are parked in a designated section of the car park.
Some free two-hour parking spaces are available on Oriental Parade to help compensate for the loss of swimmer parks.
