We are seeking public feedback on a proposed change to the District Plan aimed at continuing to give protection to remnant nikau palms and vegetation, which includes exotic and native plants, in residential areas.

Plan Change 23 has been brought about by new laws which prevent councils giving blanket protection to trees in urban environments unless specifically identified in the District Plan.

Currently the protection of remnant nikau palms and removal of vegetation in residential areas fall into this category.

Environmental Policy Analyst Chloe Smith says without the plan change there is a risk remnant nikau palms and areas of vegetation in the city could be lost.

“This would have adverse effects on the environment and the community’s amenity values, such as loss of local landscape and character."

"The changes we are proposing will give greater certainty that remnant nikau palms will be protected and vegetation in residential areas will be managed for the benefit of current and future generations.”
