Marlborough schools lead the way in the New Zealand Enviroschools programme, with the greatest proportion of schools taking up the programme of any district in the country.

There are 21 Enviroschools in our district – 68% of the nationwide total. Three new schools are waiting to join and another couple have made enquiries.

Marlborough District Council works alongside Marlborough schools on the project, providing resources and workshops for the schools to teach this environmental programme.

Council Education Officer Annie McDonald works with teachers and children so that they’re working on real projects of community value that underline to them the importance of what they’re learning.

“We’re lucky to have some passionate teachers in Marlborough who can bring alive the importance of environmental values to these students,” says Annie.

The Kid’s Edible Gardens scheme sits alongside the Enviroschools programme, run in partnership between the Council and NMDHB. There are now 20 of these gardens created and maintained by school children across our district.

The Council works with schools on the Enviroschools programme because it is a great way to promote the Council’s strategic goals of reducing waste, improving water quality, creating more edible and natural habitats, and encouraging everyone to think about effective energy use in the way buildings are designed and built.
