It may have been ‘hug an Aussie day’ in Nelson yesterday (Sept. 29) but the previous night the South Island city was struggling to meet some special visitors’ demands for local salmon.

Wallaby Quade Cooper went online on Wednesday to tweet that the team’s hotel sushi restaurant had run out of salmon.

Aussies are more accustomed to their home fare of Atlantic salmon but it would appear the team has taken quite a fancy to its newly discovered New Zealand King salmon species.

Given that the Nelson / Blenheim area produces most of the world’s supply of King salmon, the local shortage is all the more surprising according to NZ King Salmon CEO Grant Rosewarne.

“This situation cannot be allowed to continue – we are committed to resupplying the Wallabies as soon as we can,” he says. “New Zealand Kings are renowned for having the highest natural content of healthy Omega-3 oils important for life and good health and which can help to maintain a healthy heart.

“I’m sure all Kiwis want a New Zealand versus Australia world cup final so hopefully we can help get them there – but we promise to stop supplying them with salmon once they do qualify.”

NOTE - Quade Cooper’s tweet:
