Council Declines Hotel Proposal
Hamilton City Council will not pursue a partnership with Rotorua-based Te Arawa Group Holdings to develop a hotel on land behind the ArtsPost building on Victoria Street.
Te Arawa’s proposal was for the construction of a $25 million 150-room 3.5-4 star hotel on the site, which is currently a carpark.
Council considers the land as having strong ties to the city’s art precinct, and believes hotel developments – while positive for the city – should be undertaken in other locations in the CBD.
Council and Te Arawa have agreed that despite this proposal not progressing, both parties will explore other options to work collaboratively on investments and development in Hamilton.
