Andy Robinson remains confident about his future despite becoming the first Scotland coach not to lead his squad into the knockout stages of a Rugby World Cup.

The Scots lost their final Pool B game on Saturday when England rallied for a 16-12 victory, leaving Robinson's side with two wins and two defeats from their four pool matches.

"I have a contract to 2015, so I will be discussing the next steps for Scottish rugby over the next couple of weeks,'' Robinson said on Sunday, an hour after his side were eliminated from the tournament due to Argentina's win over Georgia.

Robinson admitted there is work to do, saying: "We have to build on the improvements we have made on this squad over the last four or five years, the depth of the players that have gone through.

"We have a squad of 35 players who can play well and now it is just taking it to the next level to win the games we are close to winning."

Positive outlook

Asked what it will take to lift Scotland, he said: "It is that concentration throughout the whole 80 minutes at club and international level.

"And, by doing that at every Test match, Scotland will be at their best to win. We were not at our very best against Argentina and we were not at our very best against England - and that is why we did not win.''

Robinson was keen to reflect on the positives. "I think the team have shown they can compete. England were Six Nations champions and they had to win (on Saturday) to qualify.

"It was a great Test match and it showed we can play well against a very good team and put ourselves in a winning position."

But he said the overall outcome was hard to take. "It was a huge disappointment, but I am disappointed about losing any rugby game," he added.

"It is disappointing not reaching the quarter-finals. It shows how much everyone is improving and the level is getting better and better."
