A cycle lane is to be formed on Kennedy Road from Wellesley Road to Georges Drive, making it easier and safer for commuters and school children to bike to and from the city.

Angle and parallel vehicle parks will be reconfigured on the busy arterial to create a strip for a cycleway.

The next section of Kennedy Road to be targeted under the Napier City Council’s BIKE IT strategy will be between Georges Drive and Riverbend Road.

Napier has seen a steady increase in the numbers of people cycling over the last year as more people take to cycleways created throughout the city.

A pathway for cyclists and walkers was recently created along one of the city’s most scenic coastal stretches, on The Esplanade between James Street and the existing pathway north of Westshore.

In early July, a start was made on widening the existing footpath on the seaward side of Westshore Bridge. As part of that work, safety railing was constructed to separate vehicle traffic from pedestrians and cyclists.

At the same time, work began on constructing a pathway along the western side of Prebensen Drive between Taipo Stream and the existing pedestrian crossing at Cato Road.

Both those projects have been completed, and a pathway has also been formed from Customs Quay through the Napier Sailing Club grounds to Meeanee Quay.

These latest projects are all further steps towards achieving a network of cycling and walking paths aimed at encompassing the city.
