After two wins from two starts the SUBWAY® Pro Cycling team is looking to consolidate its lead in the team’s classification, the Under 23 and overall individual honours in round three of the Benchmark Homes Elite Tour being held in North Canterbury on Saturday.

The SUBWAY® Pro Cycling team has dominated the opening two rounds of the series with Sam Horgan winning in Nelson and his teammate Tom Hubbard winning the second round in Timaru, in the process gaining the lead in the Under 23 classification as well.

The team’s General Manager Hayden Godfrey said he was happy with the “perfect start to the series” with two wins from two events, but it was now important to maintain that momentum.

“It is important the team defends and consolidates the leads in the overall, under 23 and teams competition. They have raced very well together and team morale is high.”

Godfrey said everyone that had to perform to make the SUBWAY® Pro Cycling team selection for the Powernet Tour of Southland which will be announced next week.

Hubbard said he felt he was riding well and was keen to build on his win in round two of the Benchmark Series.

“I really want to hold onto the under 23 leader’s jersey and be in the mix in the overall leaders results, but it’s a team’s race, so I’m conscious we have to perform as a team which will make the individual results easier to come by,” Hubbard said.

Round one winner Horgan was also keen to build on his opening round success, but said he would also be happy if it was another SUBWAY® Pro Cycling team mate that took the individual win.

“The team is going very well, and we all know the course well so we should deliver a good result for the team. We all need to be putting our hands up with strong performances with the team being named next week for the Tour of Southland, so this Saturday is our last chance to show we’ve got the form to head to Southland.”

The Parry Field Lawyers Open round three of the Benchmark Series is 141 kilometres long and starts and finishes in Cust.

The SUBWAY® Pro Cycling team for Saturday is Jason Allan, Dillon Bennett, Horgan, Hubbard, Paul Odlin and Ian Smallman.
