The Moorhouse Avenue overbridge, which crosses over Colombo Street, has been closed to heavy traffic from today as a result of further structural assessments following aftershocks.

The closure applies to heavy vehicles weighing over 3500kg. Parking underneath the bridge will no longer be allowed. Signage will be put in place this weekend to advise motorists of the changes.

Christchurch City Council’s Transport and Greenspace Unit Manager Alan Beuzenberg says the closure is a precautionary measure only and the bridge is still safe for light traffic.

“This should not cause significant disruption to the heavy vehicles affected, as they can divert to using the ground-level lanes either side of the bridge.

“We are continually re-assessing the structural integrity of all our bridges around the city as aftershocks continue and, where appropriate, will take precautionary measures.”
