Recycling fever has hit the Wakatipu Basin in the run up to the start of kerbside collection in nine days time,” Queenstown Lakes District Council solid waste advisor Dr Linda Wright said.

“It is so great to see that people in their enthusiasm have started to put their recycling bins out for collection, before we have even started the service,” she said.

The passionate reaction to recycling from some households was a great sign that the community was totally in behind the new service.

“We just need people to hang fire until we are up and running from October 22,” Dr Wright said.

The service would kick off from that date on the same day as people’s normal rubbish collect.

“As with the normal refuse collection, the new recycling wheelie bins need to be on the kerbside by 8am,”

The roll-out programme would continue this week with 75 percent of all recycling wheelie bins having been delivered.

“Anyone without a recycling container by October 19 should contact the council. In a project of this scale, unfortunately it’s possible there may be the odd teething problem but over the next few weeks our plan is to have a first class kerbside recycling service seamlessly delivered to the Wakatipu,” Dr Wright said.

Meanwhile the Wakatipu Recycling Centre building had now been completed and handed over to the contractor, with the plant due to be commissioned on Wednesday.
