Dame Alison Holst Comes Home To Dunedin City Library
Dunedin residents will have a chance to welcome home Dame Alison Holst on Thursday 3 November from 5.30pm, when she visits Dunedin City Library to talk with Barbara Larson about her memoir, A Home Grown Cook: The Dame Alison Holst Story.
Born and raised in Dunedin, Holst’s career has seen her grace Kiwi bookshelves and television sets since 1965. Her ‘no-fuss’ approach to cooking has resonated continuously with busy mothers across the country, and now her extensive catalogue of cookery books have become treasured culinary bibles, brimming with family favourites.
Holst’s career has been an unequivocal success – so much so that she has become a trusted brand in her own right. Her name and image grace supermarket shelves throughout New Zealand, while she regularly helps to promote New Zealand abroad.
Her industrious lifestyle is belied by her characteristic charm and calm spirit. Between juggling her work commitments and concocting new recipes she has worked extensively with a number of charities close to her heart over the years, especially those that help children. Her hard work was recognised when she was awarded a Queen’s Service Medal in 1983, followed by a CBE in 1987.
Holst’s rise from kitchen cook to Dame is a story worth hearing first hand.
Everyone in the audience will go into a draw to win a signed copy of A Home Grown Cook: The Dame Alison Holst Story, and copies will be on sale at a discounted price.
Afterwards, audience members will have an opportunity to end their culinary woes with the ‘Queen of the Kitchen’ in a question and answer session, and have their copies of her new memoir signed.
