WANT SAUCE WITH THAT? - 60,000 SNARLERS ON WAY FOR ‘THE FONTERRA SHOUTS’

A Southland butcher is seeing sausages in his sleep after serving up the first of 60,000 sausages this week in preparation for what is expected to be the nation’s largest sausage sizzle. Fonterra is marking its 10th birthday this month, hosting six regional events around the country on Labour Day, Monday 24th October, from midday to 4.30pm.

With a side order of 80,000 slices of bread, 1800 litres of tomato sauce and 200 aprons for the farmers manning the 40 BBQs, this sizeable order is fit for thousands.

The team at Bowmont Wholesale Meats, based in Invercargill, has prepared the first batch of 8500 sausages today as it kick-starts production on the order for Fonterra’s events around the country.

“Bowmont Meats has supplied the Fonterra Edendale site for many years but this order takes things to a new level – I’m even starting to see sausages in my sleep,” said Stephen Flynn, Operations Manager.

“We have a team of six working to get through 8500 sausages each day for the next week. It’s a big job but we’re ready for the challenge,” Stephen said.

Once these are cooked and packed the load will be collected by national foodservice distributor Bidvest who will cart each order around the country to stock the chilly bins on Labour day. Bidvest is astounded at their largest sausage delivery to date.

Bowmont Meats, a family business situated in the heart of Invercargill, was started by Jack Flynn in the early 1930’s. John and Judith Flynn and their two sons now manage the strong business.

Bowmont Meats prides itself on providing the highest quality meat, specialising in the processing of Hereford Prime Beef - the cut of choice used in the sausages made for the Fonterra Shouts.

Fonterra farmers from around the country have volunteered to cook at the Shouts in Northland, Waikato, Taranaki, Manawatu, Canterbury and Southland.

The Fonterra Shout promises to be a great Kiwi day out for everyone who wants to come along for the entertainment, BBQs and ice cream treats. It is a great chance for the Co-op to thank the many people and communities who have helped during its first ten years.
