The New Zealand Police, Waitaki Road Safe and the Waitaki District Council will conduct a
Fatigue Stop’ at Maheno on Friday 21 October. The aim is to raise awareness of the dangers of driver fatigue over the long weekend.

Vehicles stopped by the Police will be offered water bottles, pens and the opportunity to get out of their vehicles and take a break from driving. Coffee, tea and sausages will also be available to those motorists wishing to rest for a while.

Road Safety Co-ordinator Elton Crane explained, “These initiatives are a timely reminder to
drivers that when you are fatigued, your reactions are much slower and your ability to
concentrate is reduced. It takes longer to interpret and understand the traffic situation.”

It is hoped that drivers will take a moment to realise the importance of being alert while
controlling a vehicle. Mr Crane added, ‘Everyone wants to make the most of the long weekend,
but most importantly, we all want to arrive safely at our destination.”
