The decision to undertake a controlled demolition of the Christchurch Cathedral is the right decision, said the Green Party today.

"The decision makes the Cathedral safe for the present and preserves rebuild options in the future," said Green Party earthquake spokesperson, Kennedy Graham.

"Christchurch Cathedral is an icon of the city. It is the major symbol of our past, and retaining the option to rebuild it for the future is the right decision.

"I am aware of the extent of concern expressed in recent days by many groups over the Cathedral. I respect that concern - and share it.

"But I am satisfied that there has been a thorough process followed to reach this decision - one that has involved the range of relevant parties.

"Important decisions about other historic buildings should also follow a robust consultative model.

"Making the Cathedral safe now ensures proper decisions can be made for a sustainable and resilient rebuild of this iconic building," said Dr Graham.
