Recommendations and learnings from Audit New Zealand’s report into Hamilton’s V8 Supercar event will be the focus of Council as it works to ensure there is no repeat of issues highlighted in the review.

The report, presented to Council yesterday (27 October), was commissioned by Council for an independent review of the process followed for the annual races which have run on the streets of Hamilton since 2008. It has recently been announced 2012 will be the last race for the city.

A range of shortcomings in Council’s processes for decision making and reporting on the V8 Supercars event were highlighted in the 56 page report.

The report will now be considered by Councillors and staff, with it returning to Council for full debate and consideration, along with recommendations for action from Chief Executive Barry Harris. This meeting will take place on Wednesday 9 November 2011.

Chief Executive Barry Harris says: “The Audit NZ report is not a good read and highlights some serious holes in Council’s processes. However I am very confident that with recent changes to Council’s committee structures, management structure, risk management and financial and project reporting our community can be assured that future projects will be well scoped and transparent in operation.

“We will learn from this review and any future changes needed, coupled with those already implemented should assure the public we are committed to the highest standards of accountability as we perform our civic duties.”
