A partnership between Environment Canterbury and Tai Poutini Polytechnic – Digger School.

The Environmental Awareness Award is a proactive approach to erosion and sediment control, on earthwork sites. This is the fifth year the award has been presented. The programme has been operating since 2008.

A trophy and $300 prize will be given to the student who has demonstrated outstanding understanding and application of environmental awareness during the course of their study. The second place winner receives $150; the third place winner $50.

The award encourages students, through their course work and practical application, to demonstrate an awareness of environmental outcomes; display an interest in applying environmental awareness skills to the job; and an understanding and respect for the consequences of not applying skills.

When: Friday, November 4, 2011, 2:00-3:00 pm

Where: CPIT (Digger School), Sullivan Ave Campus, Christchurch.

Background

The six month digger training course is administrated by Tai Poutini Polytechnic. Environment Canterbury is working with Tai Poutini to help raise awareness and understanding of students on how to protect the environment during earthworks operations. The partnership, which involves workshops, field and class work, and producing a portfolio, highlights why considering the natural environment is key to the overall success of the students’ work and recognises best practice in achieving this outcome.

Kim Drummond, Environment Canterbury Director Resource Management will present the award.
